his sisters, his lovers, his fellow artists and

Basquiat: Rage to Riches
BBC2, 9pm

Th is is an intelligent documentary about
New York painter Jean-Michel Basquiat
(1960-1988), who rose from street
graffi ti artist to become the darling of the
downtown art scene: people who could
care less about tags but knew a good
investment when they saw one. His life
story is an interesting if tragic one, well

TRAVELOGUE

Britain’s Ancient Tracks
Channel 4, 7pm
Tony Robinson visits the Peak District,
where he walks the Derbyshire Portway,
which can be traced from Mam Tor, in
the north of the county, through to the
Hemlock Stone on the edge of Nottingham.
Along the way, he examines a prehistoric
shark tooth and discovers DH Lawrence’s
mountain retreat.

DRAMA

Casualty
BBC1, 8.40pm

Dylan is forced to bring Sanosi into the
emergency department, much to David’s
dismay; predictably enough, Lily becomes
increasingly jealous of the bond forming

between Iain and Sam; and Connie
struggles to come to terms with the
severity of her diagnosis, all too aware of
the implications it holds for her future.

CHATSHOW
Th e Jonathan Ross Show
ITV, 9.45pm
Ross welcomes actors Kit “King of the
North” Harington and Liv Tyler, singer
Mary J Blige, presenter Sue Perkins and
actor/comedian Rob Beckett. Music is
by the excellent Dua Lipa. Mike Bradley

FILM
Kiss-Ass
Syfy, 9pm
(Matthew Vaughn, 2010)
Th e revolt against the monolithic dominance
of Marvel and DC superheroes may not
actually start here, but it certainly attained
its fullest and most profane satiric brio in
this adaptation of the Mark Millar comic
book. Aaron Johnson (as he then was, before
he added the Taylor) plays Dave Lizewski,
self-created superhero who won’t let a
little thing like a lack of actual powers get
in the way of adventure. Nicolas Cage as
vigilante Big Daddy is dependably unhinged,
but the show is comprehensively stolen
by Chloë Grace Moretz as purple-bobbed,
sewer-mouthed juvenile Hit-Girl and by the
sublimely preposterous Christopher Mintz-
Plasse as reedy-voiced bad guy Red Mist.
Where so many Lycra-wrapped parodies
have failed over the years – Mystery Men,

anyone? – Kick-Ass triumphed through
invention, cheerful chutzpah and its mix of
American iconography and British panto-
style broadness. Jonathan Romney

RADIO
Rebus: Fleshmarket Close
Radio 4, 2.30pm
“Two skeletons, one murder, a missing
lassie...” Edinburgh detective John Rebus
(Ron Donachie) considers three seemingly
unrelated cases in this satisfying two-parter.
Adapted from Ian Rankin’s 2004 novel, it has
a contemporary feel, exploring the troubled
relationship between locals and foreign
refugees. Th e title refers to a real-life close in
Edinburgh’s Old Town where the discovery
of skeletons feels almost too appropriate
in a location that trades on its spooky
reputation. DS Siobhan Clarke (Gayanne
Potter) could use some help investigating
the disappearance of a girl whose sister
was raped, but things are a little awkward
between Rebus and his proteg e following
an ill-judged kiss. Stephanie Billen
