DRAMA

Overshadowed
BBC3, from 10am
Based on the play by Eva O’Connor (above,
left), this charming contemporary tale
broadcast in 10 short episodes begins with
our introduction to excited Irish vlogger Imo
(Michelle Fox, above, right), for whom life
is about to take a sad turn for the worse.
Young, funny, vibrant, and very moving.

DRAMA

Electric Dreams: Th e Commuter
Channel 4, 9pm

Th e life of Woking station ticket clerk
Ed (Timothy Spall) is transformed by a
mysterious passenger whose requests for
a ticket to an unknown destination pique
his curiosity, until he decides to see for

himself. In Philip K Dick’s original story the
commuter was a small bespectacled man.
Now it’s Tuppence Middleton. Elegant sci-fi.

POETRY/DRAMA
Men Who Sleep in Cars
BBC4, 9pm
Poet Michael Symmons Roberts’s deeply
moving “lovesong to Manchester” features
Maxine Peake as a woman lamenting her
departure from the city. Her appearances
unite the stories of three disenfranchised
men who sleep on the streets in their
vehicles. A work of genius. Mike Bradley

FILM
Privates on Parade
London Live, 12.10am
(Michael Blakemore, 1982)
Currently celebrating his 90th birthday,
playwright Peter Nichols had a stage hit
in 1977 with this gleefully scabrous piece,
inspired by his reminiscences of military
service in a concert party unit also staff ed
by Kenneth Williams and Stanley Baxter.
His Malaysian-set comedy forms a fond
tribute to the traditions of British showbiz
camp, but it also takes the pulse of post war
British social fatigue and the faultlines of
crumbling imperial confi dence. Dennis
Quilley recreates his stage triumph as
resident diva Captain Terri Dennis, John
Cleese gives his stiff -necked all as baffl ed
Major Flack, and Michael Blakemore, who
directed the RSC original, translates it to the
screen. Th ere is no substitute for seeing this

knowingly theatrical piece live, but Nichols’s
wit and trenchant insight survive the
transition in rude health. Jonathan Romney

RADIO
A Clockwork Orange
Radio 3, 9pm
Listeners may be more familiar with the
fi lm, but in 1987 Anthony Burgess published
a dramatisation of his text including his
own songs and music. Recorded the day
before in Hull with the BBC Philharmonic
as part of the BBC’s Contains Strong
Language season, this landmark production
represents the fi rst time this music has
been performed alongside the play in the
UK. Th e Radio 3 commission in honour
of the centenary of the author’s birth
also includes extracts from Beethoven’s
symphonies as intended by Burgess. Peaky
Blinders actor Samuel Edward-Cook plays
the ultra-vicious gang-leader Alex in this
dystopian classic. Stephanie Billen
