Travel + Leisure India & South Asia — October 2017

(vip2019) #1

An extravagant display of snow sculptures at the
world’s largest ice and snow carnival deserves a spot in
your bucket list. Each year, the Sun Island International
Snow Sculpture Expo gets bigger and better with a
dominant ice sculpture carved to correspond with the
cultural theme. Brightly coloured lasers and lanterns
highlight the intricate details and create a bewitching
spectacle at night. There are different parts of the
festival, the Harbin Ice lantern Art Fair, Harbin Ice and
Snow World, and the Harbin Ice Festival held in areas
including Zhāolín Park and Sun Island Park. Beginning
in late December, the festival goes on for almost
two months, owing to the freezing temperatures—as
low as -35OC—so don’t forget to pack your
turtlenecks and mitts.
