Maldives magnet for five-star brands

The high-end units continue to stack up in the Maldives with
Waldorf Astoria set to make its debut on South Male Atoll
in Q1 2019. The new-build resort will contain 130 rooms and
10 F&B outlets and marks Hilton’s second hotel in the Indian
Ocean islands, complementing the Conrad Rangali Maldives
resort. Emaar Hospitality Group will also enter the market with
Address Madivaru Maldives Resort + Spa, containing 80 beach
and over-water villas, due to open on Ethere Madivaru private
island in 2020.

THE WORLD’S BIGGEST tech
companies descended on Berlin last
month to showcase their latest gadgets
and consumer products at IFA 2017 and
none had a bigger showing than Sony,
reports Mike Priest. The Japanese electronics
manufacturer unveiled a suite of new
devices, many of which are well-suited
towards the discerning business traveller.
Leading the charge was a trio of
headphones that took an upgraded
approach to the company’s already
exemplary noise-cancelling tech. Each
model, be it the classic headband-style
WH-1000XM2, round-the-neck WI-1000X,
or truly wireless WF-1000X earbuds, is
equipped with what Sony has dubbed
‘Adaptive Sound Control’ that manages the
level of noise cancellation so that boarding
announcements and other important

environmental noise filters through
without needing to take them off.
For something a little closer to
home, Sony also threw its hat into the
smart speaker ring this year with the
announcement of the LF-S50G,

a future-looking wireless speaker with
Google Assistant built-in that is poised to
revolutionise your office and home. Able to
synchronise seamlessly with your existing
Google account, it will allow you to set
calendar appointments, check flight and
weather information and playback high
fidelity music in 360-degree sound – all
with your voice.
On the smartphone front, the Xperia
XZ1 was announced as the company’s
newest flagship mobile device. This
5.2in handset boasts a Full HD display
with HDR compatibility, Hi-Res audio,
and a 19-megapixel camera complete
with Sony’s advanced Motion Eye tech.
The perfect companion for any working
professional, it’s all wrapped in a sleek
matte-finished version of the Xperia line’s
iconic oblong design.
