alternate path for the water to return
to the tank should the filter become
clogged.
n The most important tasks like
topping off the tank, feeding and
turning the lights on and off can be
automated. That leaves the sitter
with only the job of making sure
everything is running properly.

Things to avoid
n Vacation Feeders: Sold at many
shops, they seem like a great
solution since all you have to do
is drop them in water. They can
pollute the water and are not always
effective feeders. Instead, invest in
an automatic feeder.
n Overfeeding: Don’t be under

any misconception that if you
feed your fish a lot before you
go they will be able to survive
without food when you go away.
Overfeeding is bad for fish and
also causes water pollution. Also,
they need food regularly so make
arrangements.
n Don’t introduce new plants or
new fish or new decor in the tank
right before you leave. This will
destabilise the aquarium.

When you return
n See that the fish are all ok. Note
any changes in appearance and
any abnormal behaviour.
n Check that all equipment is
running well. Replace or clean the

filter etc.
n Perform a 25% water change to
remove accumulated toxins from
the tank and to improve water
quality. Siphon out accumulated
waste from the bottom of the tank
n Refill the tank with de-chlorinated
water and match the temperature in
the tank.
n You will mostly find that your
aquarium survived just fine in your
absence since most aquarium
fish are reasonably hardy. Always
prepare your tank well when you go
on holiday so that coming home will
not have nasty surprises waiting.
