I

n the last issue, we spoke about
the differences in a kennel and
home stay and how you can
make a decision. Here is a list
of points you must communicate
with the care givers so that your pet
is fairly comfortable.
n Put on a tag with your pet’s name
and your number. In case your pet
goes missing, there is a contact that
you can be reached on.
n Keep your vet’s number on your
speed dial and share it with the
kennel.
n Share an emergency locally
available family/friend’s number that
can be reached in case you can’t
be. Choose a human who you trust
will make the right decision in your
absence.
n If your pet is unwell, or requires
medicines for chronic conditions,
make a list of medicines and write
the timing and dose that they have

to be given. Write clearly so that the
care givers at the kennel don’t have
to call to check. They have enough
to do.
n Your pet’s vaccinations must be
up to date.
n Leave a favourite toy or a bed
or a blanket with your pet. It is a
comfort factor.
n If your pet needs company or if
she/he prefers to be alone mention
that clearly.
n If you are boarding your cat in a
place where dogs also board, then
you may ask for an area where dogs

do not go.
n Keep his/her favourite treats, and
if there is a prescription diet, with the
care givers.
n If there is a walk schedule or a
meal schedule, share it. Where
possible, kennels always try to
accommodate special requests.
n Ask for regular updates, but
understand that sending hourly pics
and videos will be difficult.
n Before you send your pet to a
kennel, go for a trial run so that the
place is not totally new and also so
that your pet knows you will come
back.
n Make bye-bye comfortable. If
you are uncomfortable, your pet is
bound to sense it and will mirror the
same emotion.
n Most important, be available when
the kennel calls!

n Once back home,
check your pet for fleas
and ticks. Give him a bath
if required.
