Cirri: Fleshy filaments possessed by certain
fishes, often on the head. They may function
similarly to barbels or tentacles and may
have camouflage or breeding purposes.
Crustose coralline algae (CCA): A type of
algae with a honeycomb structure that grow
as a pink crust over and between the frag-
ments and gaps in coral reefs and cement
the corals together.
Hydraulic jetting: A strategy used by some
fishes to blow water out of their mouths
at soft substrates, such as sand, to expose
prey items.
Ommatidia: In the eyes of arthropods,
clusters of photoreceptor cells surrounded
by support cells and pigment cells.
Phoslock: A modified bentonite clay
product containing lanthanum, a naturally
occurring earth element, used to restore
water quality in ponds, lakes, reservoirs,
and aquariums. It binds and permanently
removes free reactive phosphorus (FRP)
from the water column. As it settles to
the bottom, lanthanum continues to filter
phosphorus by binding FRP released from
the sediment on its available sites. The phos-
phorus bond with Phoslock is permanent.
Scutes: Bony external plates or scales over-
laid with horn, as on the shell of a turtle, the
skin of crocodilians and some fishes, and the
feet of birds.
Spicules: Structural elements made of
calcium carbonate found in most sponges.
They provide structural support and deter
predators. Large spicules that are visible to
the naked eye are referred to as mega-
scleres, while smaller, microscopic ones are
termed microscleres.
Tetrachromatic vision: A type of visionin some fishes and other animals in which
there are four independent channels for
conveying color information, or there are
four types of cone cells in the eye.
Trichromatic vision: A type of vision, found
in humans and closely related primates and
some other mammals, characterized by
three independent channels for conveying
color information, derived from the three
different types of cone cells in the eye.
