Phosphate accumulation in aquarium water continues to be one of the most common prob-


lems faced by reef aquarists. Too high a concentration can lead to unwanted algae growth, and


phosphate also seems to inhibit the skeletal synthesis of stony corals. Therefore, controlling in-


organic phosphate is one of the prerequisites for a healthy aquarium environment. Lanthanum


is gaining popularity as a new strategy to accomplish this.
