D. KNOPto be constantly working with water and filters leads to
more stability and leaves me more time for doing what
I really like: caring for the animals and observing them.
By doing small experiments in a well-informed way, I try
to push the borders of marine aquarium-keeping a bit
further. I share my results in articles in both print and
online magazines, and I have published a handbook in
which I cover the basics of successful reefkeeping (see
below). Aquariums were one of the things that sparked
my interest in nature in general, and now I teach biol-
ogy at a high school—often using fish-related examples
in my classes.
I have seen the hobby evolve in impressive ways.
Knowledge, products, and access to many animals have
greatly improved. Many sustainable initiatives, such as
the mariculture of corals and Tridacna clams and the
breeding of fishes, are decreasing our impact on precious
natural resources. I hope to enjoy this hobby for many
more years, and I look forward to an exciting future.
