2017-10-01 Birds & Bloom

(nextflipdebug2) #1
One morning,
I was watching this snowy
egret search for food in
Mobile Bay, Alabama. The
bird used its foot to stir
up the ground, but looked
amusingly frustrated and
ruffled while doing it. But
one of the reasons this
photo came out so well is
because of the amazing
lighting, which was in part
due to the cool, crisp air.

Snowy egrets have
black bills and are
smaller than yellow-
billed great egrets.

ID TIPS

I leave my f lowers and seed-bearing plants
intact at the end of the growing season because they
provide much-needed food for the birds during the
fall and winter months. The dried plants also provide a
perch for the birds to rest, like a dried sunflower head
did for this sweet black-capped chickadee.
