AS CHILDREN, WE WERE ASTONISHED when we saw the huge South American tank in the Cologne
Zoo and wondered what it would be like to swim and snorkel there. Years later we are en-
thusiastic aquarists, and our fascination with water has turned us into dive instructors and
underwater photographers traveling the world’s seas.
Originally, our trip to Brazil was focused on a visit to the island of Fernando de Naronha,
because the underwater world there is simply fantastic. But as we planned our 2016 trip, we
got the idea to make a detour into the Pantanal to experience the jungle and have an Ama-
zon adventure. Reports in AMAZONAS about fishing trips deep into the jungle are incredibly
inspiring, but it takes a huge amount of effort to actually pull it off. To penetrate into seldom-
explored areas requires extensive planning, and without contacts on the ground and the
required permits, it’s not possible.
The area around Bonito has already been described frequently, for several good reasons.
The region is quite easy to reach, and it has a decent tourism infrastructure. Tourismo Eco-
logico is even sponsored by the state. Another plus is that no malaria prophylaxis is needed
because the area around Bonito is free of malaria, Dengue fever, and Zika virus. This tour is
basically suitable for everyone.
