■ Vote in the Birders’ Choice
Awards! Who did the most for
birds in 2017? What are the most
extraordinary discoveries in avian
research in the last 12 months?
Which reserve has really put itself
on the national map, and why?
And what products are genuinely
revolutionising modern birding? Have your
say on all these questions and more in our
annual celebration of the best in birding.
■ Get to grips with grebes As autumn gives way to winter,
numbers of waterfowl build in coastal waters. Among the
grebes, Great Crested is the most likely – and most familiar
- around our coasts, but Red-necked, Slavonian and Black-
necked are all possible in favoured areas. Separating them at
range in choppy waters is not always straightforward, but Andy
Stoddart has all the ID advice you need.
■ Snow birds As late autumn progresses, our winter visitors
are settling in, and among the wildfowl and waders are also
a few passerine species. Perhaps the most charismatic of
these is Snow Bunting. In his latest species pro le, David
Callahan takes a look at this polar wanderer, revealing little-
known facts about its life, both here and abroad.
■ Lake Prespa Ringed by an amphitheatre of mountains,
Lake Prespa in Greece is a dramatic location with a host
of natural riches. Hundreds of breeding pairs of Dalmatian
and Great White Pelicans are the star attractions, but large
numbers of Pygmy Cormorants, wildfowl including Ferruginous
Duck, a varied cast of herons and even Brown Bear and Wolf
all add to its extraordinary mix. Mark Cocker reports.
Plus: more list-boosting late autumn itineraries,
columnists Bill Oddie and Mark Avery, Steve Young’s
photo challenge, the art of Darren Woodhead, all the
big stories, detailed rarity and scarcity analysis, and
the best photos from around Britain, Ireland and the
Western Palearctic with BirdGuides.com, news, views
and reviews, and all your birding questions answered by
our team of experts.
