Exclusive Nature Tour
Mountain pygmy-possums are genuinely
adorable and survive in some of Australia’s
most frigid environments. For a marsupial
once thought extinct, they are remarkably
abundant in this boulderfield area of the
Australian Alps. Regardless, when we first
filmed them in the wild, it took special effort.
One evening, we attempted something we One evening, we attempted something we
had never tried before: tempting them with
walnuts and peanut butter – a tried and
tested formula Linda uses to harmlessly
lure her research subjects into traps
so they can be tagged and later released.
TTo our joy, it worked. We tried again the
next night, with Linda sitting motionless
in the background. Five minutes latein the background. Five minutes later,
before the sun even set, a cheeky possum
was scrabbling in Linda’s pocket for the
walnuts. Another grabbed a stick smeared
with peanut butter and took off, eventually
returning to become the star of the show
in front of our carefully placed camera.
