Fly by Night A pair of Black-crowned
Night Herons are silhouetted
against the pitted face of a glorious,
luminous full moon. Upon hearing the
unmistakable squaking fl ight
call of the birds in Rajpipla, Gujarat,
Dr. Mohan Ram turned his gaze
skyward and recognised a stellar
photo opportunity. The textures
of this simple black and white
image, the mysteries of the moon
and the sense that the birds are
fl ying extraordinarily high make
this an image to return to over and
over again.

Smoke on Water Mystic plumes
of smoke seem to waft across
the waters of a lake in Lalbagh,
Bengaluru. But it wasn’t mists that
Vishruth Cavale was witness to
that October evening, it was Cattle
Egrets. Those ubiquitous herons that
can be seen around waterbodies
across the Indian countryside and
urban nature escapes. Capturing the
movement of these commonplace
birds along the water’s edge in a
milky smear, Cavale has made an
enigmatic frame.
