A: From the Target Camera
application (Surround View) and
Cognitive (Decision –making),
the R-Car H3 provides cognitive
computing capabilities, an enhanced
computing performance that can
process large volumes of information
from vehicle sensors accurately
in real-time, and enables system
manufacturers to run applications
that require complex processing,
such as obstacle detection, driver
status recognition, hazard prediction,
and hazard avoidance. To further
accelerate the driving safety support
systems, the R-Car H3 also conforms
to ISO 26262 ASIL-B. Renesas has
showcased a self-driving vehicle that
includes the R-Car H3 at CES 2017.

Q:How will the R-Car platform
support Automated Driving?

A: The R-Car platform acts as a
computer vision platform for vision
(camera) and (cognitive). The R-Car
is part of Renesas autonomy™, an

open, trusted and innovative platform
for ADAS and automated driving.
R-Car platform consists of hardware
devices (SoCs and MCUs), SW/
HW tools, OS, middleware which is
delivered by ecosystem for camera
(computer vision), multi-camera
(computing vision + graphics),
computing (fusion, cognitive) and
V2X.

Q: With Automated driving
gradually moving to reality, the
intra-vehicle networking will be
much faster; therefore, it has
to go from CAN (Control Area
Network) to FDR (Fast Data Rate).
What is the role of Renesas in this
transformation?

A: Renesas is fully equipped to
support the fast data need of the
industry through CAN-FD, Flexray and
Ethernet for intra-vehicle networking.

Q: It is estimated that about
72GB of data will be generated
daily by a connected car.
Therefore, the processing should
be faster to manage huge IOPs

  • input / output operations per
    second. How does Renesas help
    its customers in managing them?
    A: Renesas offers R-CAR for
    connected car technology which
    has processing capability up to
Octa-core, each of them operates at
1.5GHz to meet the high-speed data
    throughputs.

Q: How do you mitigate
obsolescence which is very high
in electronics industry?
A: Renesas offers scalable platforms
to meet the fast changing market
trends. One of the examples is R-Car,
which offers low to high-end solutions
for autonomous driving, infotainment
and navigational applications.

Q: Is there any specific solution
that you offer for customers in the
emerging markets such as India
where cost plays a key role?
A: To meet the Indian cost challenge,
Renesas is developing solutions
reference design as well as technical
specifications.Renesas Electronics
India has offices in Bangalore, New
Delhi, Mumbai and Pune.

Q: India is very active in software
development but it is still in the
nascent stage when it comes to
the final product that you supply.
Is there a plan for Renesas to fuel
the India market?
A: Renesas recognizes India’s
software talent. In this direction, we
have included several Independent
Design Houses (IDHs) to support our

R-Car eco-system.

Q: About the role of India in
Renesas?
A: India is one of the most
important markets for Renesas and
strengthening our presence here
is part of our growth strategy. We
aim to expand our global sales by
providing the best solution offerings
and technical product support, as
well as a regional systems solution
development expertise to the Indian
market.
Renesas understands the unique
needs of emerging markets. In
order to expand Renesas’ footprint
in markets like India, Renesas
India will engage with the Renesas
headquarters in Singapore and
Japan to develop new products and
solutions dedicated for emerging
countries including India. Our goal
is to become the most trusted
supplier of semiconductors. The
application engineering team aims
to survey the market for future
solution needs and design solutions
as required in the Indian market.
Along with the customers, the team
also intends to collaborate with the
design houses to create innovative
solutions addressing upcoming
needs of the Indian market.

Q: A generic question: With
the population of Millennials
increasing and they being
impatient, digital as well as
value and experience seekers,
what kind of solutions does
Renesas plan for them through
different industrial segments
including automotive?

A: India is a home to 600 million
Millennials and counting. These
Millennials are impatient, digital
as well as value and experience
seekers. We will create products
and solutions seeking their future
requirements. The end-use
industries such as Information
Technology, Office Automation (IT
& OA), industrial machinery, and
automobiles have applications
for computing in some form or
other and thereby necessarily
have growing demand for
semiconductors. Now with the
concept of Internet of Things
(IoT) picking up momentum, the
next generation of interconnected
devices would further increase the
demand for intelligent computing,
thereby creating sustainable
demand for semiconductors.
