  1. OFF-ROAD UPGRADES

MAXIMUM CLEARANCE
The overall clearance has a massive
effect on a camper trailer’s off-road
capability. The axle or trailing arm is
left vulnerable to rocks and obstacles
out on the tracks and a poor departure
angle can allow the rear of your camper
to scrap on steep angles. Increasing
the departure angle is usually achieved
by actually raising the camper with a
body or suspension lift. But soft floor
campers may run into trouble with this
modification as the tent’s canvas may not
be able to touch the ground. In this case,
protecting vulnerable areas with guards
and bash plates is the next best thing.
Increasing the tyre size is the only way
to raise the axle or trailing arm’s height,
but this will also raise the camper
trailer’s ride height.

When the decision is made to tackle some
of Australia’s most iconic destinations, you
can bet your bottom dollar your camper will
see some very harsh terrain. Upgrades are
available to improve your camper trailers off-
road performance, minimising the chances
of damaging your camper trailer on tougher,
more challenging tracks.

OFF-ROAD COUPLINGS

When it comes to going off-road with a
camper trailer, an off-road hitch is an absolute
necessity. When compared to a standard
on-road tow ball, it allows the camper trailer
to move independently to the 4WD, which
is especially important on steep approach
and departure angles or large ruts. Poly
block couplings also help absorb some of
the vibration, which is especially good over
potholes and harsh corrugations.

SHOCK ABSORBERS

A set of quality shock absorbers can potentially
save you hundreds of dollars in the long run
when it comes to touring the outback. This is
because the shock absorbers dampen a large
percentage of the impact caused by pot holes
and corrugations. This means the rest of your
camper receives a cushioned ride, which is
great news for your more fragile luggage. The
dampening effect from shock absorbers also
promotes better stability over rough terrain by
limiting how much the springs actually bounce.
