A
trip to the Top End starts well
before you pack the 4WD, hitch up
the camper and hit the road. The
daydreams start the day you hand in
your leave form. The planning and purchasing
starts the day after and doesn’t stop till a good
few hours before you’re out of the driveway. The
amount of sensational times you have before you
even get to this absolutely epic location makes a
trip to the Gulf of Carpentaria a true once-in-a-
lifetime trip! And we all know how good it is once
you’re there. However, what if we told you a trek
to this fi shing and camping mecca doesn’t have
to be just a dream trip you do once? You’d be
surprised how easy it is to make such an ultimate
adventure into a bi-annual, even annual, trip – let
us show you how it’s done!
Situated nearly 100km north-west of
Borroloola and 200km west of the Queensland
border, Manangoora Station is as good as a
Top End destination gets. The rough roads,
lack of signage and absolute isolation keeps
the grey nomads and the like away, and the
fi shing, crabbing and camping is second to
none. Manangoora Station sits right on the
picturesque Wearyan River, which runs out
directly in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Haven’t heard
of the Wearyan? That’s what we were like before
the fi rst trip – now it’s part of almost every
camping and fi shing anecdote we throw around
A healthy 67cm barra.
These were responding
well to our trolled deep-
diving hard bodies
