Over-infl ated tyres wear in the centre more
than the outside edges. This is due to the
pressure being too high, making the centre
the main point of contact with the road. Some
people are under the impression that if you
over infl ate your tyres they will last longer,
which is simply not the case. An over-infl ated
tyre won’t spread the load of the 4WD evenly
across the rubber and will chew apart the
middle third far too quickly. Before you know it
you’ve destroyed an expensive set of muddies
that have worn unevenly – they’ll have plenty of
tread left on the edges, but less in the middle,
making them far less effective when you hit a
muddy bog hole.

Worn shocks can play a big part in the
premature wear of your tyres. Most people
don’t realise that if your shocks are stuffed
your wheels bounce while you’re driving. And
a wheel that bounces hits the road hard, and
wears quicker than one that absorbs harsh
impacts smoothly.
An easy way to see if your shocks are
buggered is have a look at your tyres, you will
see a feathering effect (feathering is when
a tyre tread is flicking up at one end of the

tread blocks). The feathering is caused by
the tyre bouncing as a result of not enough
dampening in the shock which lets the
spring bounce uncontrollably and causes the
tyre to skip across the road or track instead
of rolling. Feathering can also be caused by
loose wheel bearings or an out of balance
tyre, either way, it’s going to wear out your
tyres quicker if the problem is rectified. This
applies to the tyres on both your trailer and
your tow vehicle
