Jigsaw(M18)

STARRING Matt Passmore, Tobin Bell, Laura Vandervoorf DIRECTED BY Michael Spierig & Peter Spierig

It’s hard to believe that
there hasn’t been a Saw
movie since 2010. For seven
consecutive years — beginning
with the 2004 original — the
story of The Jigsaw Killer (Tobin
Bell), a terminally-ill tormentor
who subjects his victims to a
series of innovative contraptions
and grisly challenges, has been
a Halloween staple. After a
while, the laws of diminishing
returns set in and the overlapping timelines and
convoluted plotting (Jigsaw’s death in Saw III hasn’t
stopped him from appearing in four more sequels)
made it difficult to keep up with the mythology. So
if you’re expecting Jigsaw to be a reboot where you
start over with a clean slate, guess again — it’s a
continuation and it’s still kinda confusing. This time,

a group of random strangers
— including Laura Vandervoort
(Smallville’s Supergirl) — are
being put through the wringer
in a barn. Is this the work of
Jigsaw or his disciple? Wait,
Jigsaw is dead.... oh, never mind.
Jigsaw, like its predecessors,
isn’t a movie — it’s a glorified
Escape Room game; there’re
the outlandish traps, and
the squeamish and uneasy
moments where people stick their hands into places
they are not supposed to or sharp objects are dropped
on people trapped in a silo. You know a Saw movie
has done its job when you’ve spent most of the time
covering your eyes. No shame admitting it.
