This local brand wins points

for offering wallet-friendly

bakes. And its new and

improved pandan chiffon

cake which features a

“stronger and sweeter

pandan aroma” is more

than passable for its price,

considering that the bakery

claims to use only fresh

pandan juice. We tasted the

 uffy cake and found it to be

faintly perfumed with what

tastes like fresh pandan

juice mixed with some

essence. Decent  avour,

though it is (understandably)

not as fragrant as its more

premium counterparts.

Bengawan Solo is argurably the best-known brand for

pandan chiffon — it has popularised the cake since opening

shop in 1979, after all. Perhaps ’cos it has three convenient

outlets at Changi Airport, it is the go-to bake for locals and

tourists who want to bring a slice of Singapore overseas. Its

homely rendition is consistent in quality; we like its bouncy

texture that is not too dry and its light but present pandan

aroma from the fresh pandan juice (no arti cial  avouring)

and lemak coconut milk (not the packet stuff) used. It’s

slightly sweeter than most of the cakes in this feature, but

we think it’s still a satisfying treat to buy on a whim, or as

a gift for foreign friends.
