This traditional family-run bakery has been selling its

bakes in Tiong Bahru since the ’70s, and is popular for

its cheap and tasty Nonya kuehs, like a fabulous Kueh

Dadar. Someone suggested its pandan chiffon cake

to us, and we thought that this retro shop may deliver

a nostalgic version. However, while we appreciate this

cake’s pillowy texture, there’s no trace of pandan flavour

in each anaemic slice. In fact, it tastes more like a plain

sponge cake underscored by a, gulp, strong hit of oil.

This small specialist bakery chain sells no-frills

chiffon cakes, including its signature pandan flavour.

Its texture is very airy with a soft bite, and the

colour is a pale green. We detected just a barely-

there whiff of pandan juice fragrance in our slice

(the brand’s owner says that no artificial pandan

essence is used). It is obviously not as rich in

flavour as, say, Mad About Pandan Cake’s $50

version, but at $9 for a whole cake, we suppose

one can’t complain too much.
