works which Wu painted of
China from the 1960s until
the 2000s. Join Wu on his

Listening to Architecture:
The Gallery’s Histories
and Transformations.
Spanning two galleries
and a connecting walkway,
the inaugural exhibition
offers insights into the
histories and architectural
designs of the two national
monuments and their
transformations into a
home for Southeast Asian
art. It also features never-
before-seen artefacts
excavated from the Gallery’s
grounds.

The Substation:
Discipline the City
Singapore’s first and oldest
independent art space
examines complex cultural
issues in this three-part
exhibition featuring works
from artists such as Jiehui
Avery Chen, Calvin Chua

and Kuang-Yu Tsui. It will
also feature a permanent
gallery, an architectural
case competition, and
a punk-in-residence
programme titled A
Manifesto for Space, which
will see a different punk
using a space within The
Substation monthly for their
own purpose and without
restriction. There will
also be a series of public
programmes and events.

17 Volcanoes
This exhibition is shaped
around a series of
expeditions from Singapore
to Java by Dutch geologist
Franz Junghuhn to 17 of
his favourite volcanoes.
It aims to question the
traditional opposition
between the urban and
rural, and includes works by
international artists such
as Armin Linke and Bas
Princen.

21st German Film Festival
2017
Singapore’s biggest foreign film festival returns with its
21st edition, presenting over 30 films spanning art-house,
comedy, documentary and music films across two weekends.
Highlights include Western, the festival’s opening film which
explores the tensions faced by a group of Germans working
in a foreign land — it premiered at the recent Cannes Film
Festival; The Bloom of Yesterday, a romantic comedy set
within the unlikely backdrop of the Holocaust; as well as
compelling drama Club Europe. Also, meet the filmmakers
of To Be a Teacher (Jakob Schmidt), Raving Iran (Susanne
Regina Meures) and actress Sylvaine Faligant of Club
Europe at the post-show events.
