Challenges Drive
Mahindra Group
To New Frontiers
By T Murrali
The growth trajectory of the Mahindra
Group and modern India has many
parallels. One of the largest corporate
houses in India, the Mahindra Group was
born on October 2, 1945, the birthday
of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the
Nation. The Mahindra brothers, Kailash
Chandra and Jagdish Chandra, who began
with a steel trading company, ventured
into manufacturing in 1947, the dawn
of India’s Independence, by winning a
contract to manufacture Willys Jeeps in
India, the country’s first utility vehicle. In
1948, K C Mahindra named the company
as Mahindra & Mahindra. The Mahindras
steered their growth plans to build a global
brand along with emerging India.
