T

he Indian automobile sales
in September 2017 posted
10 percent growth in the
domestic market. Sales
increased from 2,263,620 units in
September 2016 to 2,490,034 units
in September 2017, according to the
sales report released by the Society
of Indian Automobile Manufacturers
(SIAM).
The passenger vehicle (PV)
dispatches for the domestic market
grew 11.32 percent in September to
309,955 units compared to 278,428
units in the same month a year ago,
as per the SIAM data.
Traditionally, utility vehicle has been
very bullish in the Indian market and
the trend has continued in September


  1. The utility vehicle dispatches
    stood at 84,374 units compared to
    66,851 units in the same month a
    year ago, thus recording a growth of
    26.21 percent. The sale of passenger
    cars went up 6.86 percent to 208,656
    units as against 195,259 units in
    September last year.


The sale of vans in September 2017
grew 3.72 percent from 16,318 units
in September 2017 to 16,925 units in
the same month this year.

Commercial Vehicles
The commercial vehicle sales rose
25.27 percent to 77,195 units in
September, from 61,621 units in the
same month last year. The main
growth driver was M&HCV segment
which grew 25.61 percent to 31,086

units compared to 24,748 units of
September 2016. Light commercial
vehicle (LCV) sales also grew 25.05
percent to 46,109 units compared
to 36,873 units in the same month
a year ago. It was mainly the goods
carrier that witnessed strong growth
in both LCV and M&HCV segments.
Sales grew on the back of growing
demand across segments supported
by the continued ramp-up in
production of BS-IV vehicles since
April this year.

Three-wheelers
Three-wheeler wholesales in India
grew 19.08 percent to 51,451 units
compared to 61,860 units dispatched
in the same month a year ago. The
main growth driver for this segment
was passenger carrier which grew
20.54 percent to 51,125 units against
42,415 units the previous year.

The goods carrier segment saw a
growth of 12.59 percent from 9,535
units last year to 10,735 units.

Two-wheelers
Motorcycle sales last month jumped
6.98 per cent to 1,269,612 units
compared to 1,186,759 units in
September 2016.

Scooter sales also posted a growth
of 13.19 percent in September 2017
to 686,478 units over 606,457 units
delivered by all the scooter makers
last year in the same month. Mopeds
also grew 8.33 percent in September
this year at 84,934 units compared to

78,405 units a year ago.
While overall two-wheeler sales also
reported a strong growth of 14.69
percent in August 2017 it grew to
9.05 percent in September 2017
touching 2,041,024 units compared
to 1,871,621 units a year ago same
month.

Exports
India exported 354,049 vehicles
in September 2017 compared to
314,074 in the same month last year,
registering a growth of 12.73 percent.
However, most of the segments –
passenger cars, utility vehicles, vans,
LCVs, scooters and mopeds - were in
the red in exports.
In April-September 2017, overall
automobile exports grew 10.71
percent. Two and three-wheeler
segments registered a growth of
15.22 percent, and 19.42 percent
respectively while passenger vehicles
and commercial vehicles declined
by 1.34 percent and 28.53 percent,
respectively in April-September 2017
over the same period last year.

Production
The industry produced 14,675,828
vehicles including passenger
vehicles, commercial vehicles,
three-wheelers, two-wheelers and
quadricycles in April-September
2017 as against 13,441,520 in April-
September 2016, registering a growth
of 9.18 percent over the same period
last year.
