GLEANINGS India

F

ord India has introduced its
all-new 1.5-litre Ti-VCT(Twin
independent Variable
Camshaft Timing) three-
cylinder petrol engine. Ford India’s
engine factory at Sanand, Gujarat,
will take the lead in manufacturing
this new family of petrol engines, both
for domestic use and exports. Ford’s
engineering team in India has steered
the development of the new engine
with key insights at every stage – from
design, development to production.
The engine will have more than 80
percent parts sourced from Indian
suppliers. It will be introduced on
New EcoSport later this year.
“Ford’s promise to give the power
of choice to consumers in India is not
just limited to the world-class product

portfolio. We are proud to offer some
of the most efficient, and advanced
powertrains, ranging from 1.0
LitreEcoBoost to 5.0 Litre V8,” Anurag
Mehrotra, President and Managing
Director of Ford India, said.
“With India taking the lead in
producing our new, highly advanced
petrol engines, we remain committed
to make in India and to bring
products and technologies that Indian
customers want and value,” Mehrotra
added.
Ford’s latest 1.5-litre naturally
aspirated engine is powered by
3-Cylinders along with state-of-the-
art technical solutions for improved
performance and efficiency while
reducing size, weight and friction. It
will offer a seven percent reduction

in CO2 emissions and a similar
improvement in fuel efficiency,
through reductions in weight and
size, and the application of innovative
technologies.

The engine downsizes from four
cylinders to a three-in-line formation,
resulting in decreased weight, lower
friction and an overall 10 percent
reduction in volume.The aluminium
engine block and cylinder head
contribute to substantial weight
reduction and better fuel economy.
The exhaust manifold integrated into
the cylinder head helps to heat up the
catalyst faster, decreasing emissions.
The variable oil pump can operate
at a lower pressure at slower speeds
with reduced friction loss, providing
higher fuel economy.

Made-in-India Jeep Compass Goes Global

F

CA India has begun exporting
right-hand drive units of the
Made-in-India Jeep Compass.
The first batch of 600 units
were recently shipped from the
Bombay Port Trust facility to Australia
and Japan. The Ranjangaon-
produced SUV with over 65 percent
local content will go to more
international markets.
Gurpratap Boparai, Chief Executive
Officer, Fiat India Automobiles Private
Limited (FIAPL), said, “Our resolve
has been to ensure timely delivery of
a world-class product, made in India,
to Indian as well as our international
customers. We had planned to
start shipping the India-made Jeep
Compass in the fourth quarter of this
calendar year and we are on track.”

The Ranjangaon manufacturing
facility featured on FCA’s global
manufacturing map as $280
million was committed towards
the localization of the Jeep
Compass. Soon after the India price
announcement FCA had rolled out
the 2.0-litre, 173 PS, 350 Nm Diesel
4x2 and 4x4 versions of the Jeep
Compass noting a higher demand,
and has now begun deliveries of
the Petrol DDCT (Dry Dual Clutch
Technology), the 7-speed automatic

transmission mated to the 1.4-litre,
162 PS, 250 Nm Multi-Air Turbo Petrol
powertrain. This transmission option
is available only with the Multi-Air
(Turbo Petrol) powertrain and is
available in two trims – Limited 4x2
and Limited (O) 4x2.
Kevin Flynn, President and Managing
Director, FCA India said, “The Jeep
Compass has gained impressive
traction in India since the price
announcement and we are enjoying
continued momentum with growing

interest as the Compass is now being
regularly seen on Indian roads. Our
effort and intent has been to pace up
our retail deliveries after the market
launch, in time for the festive season,
without losing sight of our exports for
this year. We have added five more
sales and service outlets since July
taking our distribution reach now up
to 55; closing this year with 60, as
committed. We are looking forward
to a strong 2018 when production will
be at full pace delivering on target
domestic and export numbers.”
