The name hippopotamus means ‘river horse’.
The hippopotamus is a large, herbivorous mammal found in Africa. Though heavy and
dumpy to look at, it is a super fast swimmer and can reach speeds of up to 48 km./hour
on land. Its eyes, ears and nose are perfectly positioned – on the top of its head to help
it see, hear and smell even while submerged eyeballs deep in water! Colour this hippo
