The brand’s first property occupies a prime
piece of the Windy City’s real estate, just off the
Magnificent Mile. The 67-storey building was
redesigned in 2006 by Dirk Lohan, in association
with Wight & Company. Its urban-chic aesthetic
leads from the striking black columns in the
lobby into the 198 guest rooms with reproduction
Eames furniture, Mies van der Rohe furnishings
and stunning views of Lake Michigan.
The hotel’s imposing yet modernist lobby,
which currently showcases Sigmar Polke’s
10-foot-tall canvas titled Siberian Meteorites,
has hosted celebrated artworks such as Robert
style. Chennai’s textile history informs hotel
interiors and small jewel-toned artworks
inspired by the loom form a common motif
through the property.
The hotel’s most striking art acquisition
is the bronze sculpture, The Levitating Lady,
by Kerala-based Chitra Gopi. Bathed in bright
light and connected to the ground by hair, she
appears to float above the ground. For the hotel’s
first anniversary in 2013, the Park Hyatt brand
collaborated with the Nungambakkam-based
Gallery Veda to unveil a series of artworks, False
Alternatives, beginning with a fibreglass bald
