has worked without holiday for
several years. Netizens showed great

Du Ke
Followers: 81,729 as of July 18
Chinese designer Du Ke is enjoying growing popularity online by adapting
characters from old cartoons, which were popular in the 1980s and 1990s, into
a series of illustrations in which the characters have travelled through time to
the modern era and make full play of their skills. For example, Monkey King
(the leading character of the Chinese classic novel Journey to the West) has turned
his weapon, jingubang, a flexible cudgel, into a selfie stick. He also borrowed a
magic fan from a monster to drive away the smog in Beijing. Another example,
Doraemon becomes an express delivery man thanks to his Anywhere Door,
and Spiderman becomes a fisherman. The illustrations have been praised for
being funny, imaginative and nostalgic. Many netizens born in the 80s and 90s
claimed that Du’s illustrations have taken them back to their childhood. Du
himself is given to nostalgia, with his username on Sina Weibo being “those
things in childhood.” He told media that the
higher the pressure he was under in today’s
life, the more he cherished the memories
of the old days. He hoped that these classic
animated characters will continue to live by
being integrated into his “modern” works.

Playing Sister to
Comfort Mother
In order to comfort his mother
who had lost her daughter, a
man in his 50s in Guilin, Guangxi,
has been disguising himself in
female attire for over 20 years. He
told media that his mother was
about to collapse following her
daughter’s death, but one day,
she smiled at his dressing in a
cheongsam (a traditional dress).
“It looks like your sister has come
back,” she reportedly told her son.
Since then, the man has worn
nothing but cheongsams and has
remained single. His filial love
to his mother has moved many
netizens, with some also saying
that they will no longer judge
people by their appearance, since
there might be a touching story
behind it.
