in the performance.
You met Jay for the first time
on the show.
Oh, I'm so glad I got to know
Jay! He's bright! He's a savvy
businessman too because he
owns two record labels. He's a
workaholic — whenever we were
on break, he'd be scribbling
down rap verses. I’m like, “Can
you chill out?” He’s also very
precise in his comments. I’m
very impressed with him. My
sister was really thrilled that Jay
Park was going to be a judge because she's a
huge K-Pop fan. But Jay is more than K-Pop.
He started before the K-Pop wave and he's a
rapper first! That's what I like about him. You
can't be like him and be normal (laughs).
Do you miss Season 1 judges Melanie C
and Vanness Wu?
Honestly, I could use Mel right now. Because
whenever the two boys agree on something and I don't,
I need a female on my side (chuckles). Vanness was
and is still so busy with his acting career. I guess that’s
why it took two years for the show to return — getting
everyone's schedule right is a huge task.
You took a picture with former US President
Obama in July.

Starstruck:
Anggun with
former US
President Obama
in Jakarta early
this year.
I met him in Jakarta! As you know, he
grew up in Indonesia and the country is
really important to him. I must say that
he’s one of the most impressive individuals
I have ever met in my life. I was honestly
touched by just meeting him. It's like when
you're in the same room as him, the air that
you breathe is different. People love him,
especially with what is going on in America
right now. We need people like him, leaders
who can only spread goodness. It doesn't
matter if you agree with his policies, Obama
is about tolerance and humanity. I remember
him on the cover of Time, with the caption
“New Hope.” We are now seeing the rise of
populism, which I am afraid of. I am not fearful of
bad people, but I'm afraid of good people keeping
silent.
Will you touch on politics in your music?
Not really. My upcoming album, 8 , is not about
me, but the world we live in. Everyone wants to
know the truth but no one is honest. There is so [much
fake news] and everyone is confused. Some of my songs
touch lightly on those topics. I prefer to pour all my
political views into essays, which I write regularly in my
personal time.
