BUDGET INSURANCE, COMPAREGURU, AA

In the market for a new car, but your bank balance is in dire

straits?JULIET McGUIRErecommends three vehicles that

won’t break the bank

8 TIPS FOR
SAVING FUEL
Take matters into your own
hands to make your petrol
go further (literally)

1

Don’t speed. A car going
about 120km/h can use
up to 10% more fuel than
a car cruising at around
110km/h. And don’t ‘floor
it’ – accelerate gradually.

2

Idling can be a
considerable fuel
waster. Switch off if you find
yourself at a stop-go system
for longer than five minutes
to save on fuel.

3

Check your wheel
alignment. Bad wheel
alignment causes an
increase in friction, which
takes more power to
overcome and therefore
results in higher fuel
consumption.

4

Ensure your vehicle is
serviced regularly. Worn
spark plugs, low coolant
levels, sticky brakes and
dirty oil all add up to engine
inefficiency, leading to an
increased consumption
of fuel.

5

Plan your trips carefully
and try to complete
several tasks on one trip,
as opposed to many
shorter ones. This not only
limits mileage and the
amount of time it takes to
get your chores done, but
also keeps your car’s
engine running at the
optimal temperature.

6

If spending more time
at the office means you
avoid traffic, it’s worth it.
Battling through heavily
congested traffic not only
increases fuel consumption
but also adds to the wear
and tear of your car’s
transmission and brakes.

7

Reduce drag by
removing roof racks,
bicycle holders and other
accessories that aren’t
being used at the time.

8

Check for under-inflated
tyres, as these also
increase resistance.

KIA PICANTO
1.0 MT STREET
Launched in July 2017,
the new Kia Picanto range
starts at just R134 995. For
only a little more, the 1.0 MT
Street (R149 995) comes with
ABS brakes and driver and
passenger airbags. Other
perks include air conditioning,
a USB port, AUX input,
steering-wheel controls and
a low fuel consumption
of just 5L/100km.

SUZUKI IGNIS
GL MT
With its mini-SUV styling, the
Suzuki Ignis stands out on
the road – and not just for its
looks. It has a raised ground
clearance, which means you’ll
easily be able to hoist it onto
the pavement when parking is
limited. At R169 900, the Ignis
GL MT comes with a standard
three-year/100 000km warranty
and two-year/30 000km
service plan.

TOYOTA YARIS
1.5 PULSE
The new Yaris Pulse breathes
life back into this popular
hatchback range. It’s modern
and refreshed, with a new
1.5-litre engine replacing the
1.3-litre – but, luckily, without
the fuel consumption increase.
Both the 1.0 and 1.5-litre
engines claim just 5L/100km.
Prices start at R199 000, but
the 1.5 Pulse for R228 700
means you get extra power.
