Where to wed: Glamis Castle

Atmospheric and filled with centuries of
romance, Glamis is the kind of castle that
epitomises the perfect setting for a fairytale.
Steeped in Scottish history, myth and legend,
it is the home of the earls of Strathmore and
Kinghorne, was the childhood home of Her
Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother
and was also used as a setting for a remake of
Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
Glamis has an air of grandeur mixed with
comfort in beautiful surroundings. The setting
is one of its greatest appeal and there are
photographic opportunities throughout the
castle and surrounding gardens – it has to
be seen to be believed. Even the approach to
the castle with its mile long tree lined avenue
is impressive. Because the castle is a visitor
attraction during the day, exclusive hire is only
available in the evenings, when the driveway is
lit up, creating an elegant welcome for guests.
Every wedding here is bespoke and you’ll be
in the safe hands of Wedding Planner Doreen
Stout. She can advise on every aspect of your
booking including the catering. The castle has
award-winning in-house caterers Wilde Thyme
who can create a bespoke menu package to
suit your budget.
Typically the bride enters through the front
door of the castle to a piper’s welcome and
then proceeds down the aisle to the ceremony,
ending up in The State Dining Rooms that
are a magnificent space to take your vows. It
sits 100 guests or if you require more space
The Drawings Rooms can seat 120, while the
16th century chambers, an intimate vaulted
room seats 45. Because the castle is such a
fascinating place, the team here like to ensure
your guests get to fully experience its charm, so
while you pose for your portrait photographs,
tours of the castle can be arranged for the
guests. The grounds are ideal for photos in the
summer when the evenings are longer so can
be fully enjoyed once the castle is closed, while

in Spring, there is a quaint walled garden and
the driveway is lined with vibrant daffodils
so there’s plenty of choice when it comes to
backdrops.
Dining and dancing follows after the
ceremony. The castle has a history of
entertaining so parties here really do feel
extra special, especially when you know that
you have a historic castle in such a beautiful
part of the world, all to yourself. With a
closing time of midnight you’ll have plenty
of opportunity to enjoy a full evening of
celebrations, marrying at Glamis Castle.
