English football. I am incredibly proud
just to see a 17-year-old give that inter-
view. What he has done takes incredi-
ble courage, that would seem unthinka-
ble back then [15-20 years ago]. I can’t
imagine how difficult that has been.”
Boris Johnson yesterday thanked
Daniels for his “bravery” and said that
he hoped it would inspire others.
Daniels made his debut in the Sky
Bet Championship this month for
Blackpool, having been a prolific scorer
in youth fixtures. He also signed a
sponsorship deal with Adidas last week.
Daniels said he had taken into
account the possibility that he may
become a target for abuse by rival fans.
“Of course I am aware that there will
be a reaction to this and some of it will
be homophobic, maybe in a stadium
and on social media,” he said.
“The way I see it is that I am playing
football and they are shouting stuff at
me, but they are paying to watch me
play and I am living my life and making
money from it. So shout what you want,
it’s not going to make a difference.”

Daniels hailed for ‘bravery’

Daniels said that it had been a weight
off his shoulders when he told his
mother and sister that he was gay — the
day after that he scored four goals in a
youth game against Accrington Stanley.
The only other prominent male En-
glish footballer to have come out was
Fashanu, who did so in 1990. He took his
own life eight years later. Other players
— including the former Aston Villa
midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger, 40 —
came out when their careers ended.
Robbie Rogers, the former Leeds
United defender, became the first open-
ly gay male athlete in a major North
American professional sport in 2013
when he played for Los Angeles Galaxy.
There was particular resonance to
Daniels’s announcement as it came the
day after Idrissa Gueye, the Paris Saint-
Germain midfielder, declined to play in
a match to avoid participating in a show
of support for the LGBTQ+ community.
Gueye watched the game against Mont-
pellier from the stands on the day that
all Ligue 1 players were asked to wear
shirts with rainbow colours to mark the
International Day Against Homopho-
bia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

continued from back

A furious Nathan Jones labelled the
behaviour of Huddersfield Town sup-
porters “a disgrace” after his Luton
Town side suffered play-off heartbreak
at the John Smith’s Stadium.
Thousands of fans poured on to the
pitch in celebration at the final whistle
after a late winner from Jordan Rhodes,
with some confronting Jones and his
players and others taunting Luton’s
2,000 travelling contingent.
“Their fans were an absolute dis-
grace,” Jones said. “We won’t complain
because football fans are like that but
some of those idiots didn’t paint Hud-
dersfield as a good club. You’ve won, go
and celebrate with your players.
Instead they were more concerned
with making obscene gestures at us.
“They approached me, they abused
me. Some were OK and congratulated
us, but others have not painted Hud-
dersfield Town in a good light after that.
“Some of them were taunting and
abusing our fans. I’ve seen a mother
with a little kid — if that was my wife I’d
be disgusted. I saw a woman and some
of the things she did were unbelievable.
“My players are on the floor in there
but I have nothing but pride when I
reflect on that performance. All over
the pitch we were better, but they
provided the one moment of quality.”

Brentford chasing Hickey

Brentford lead the race to sign Aaron
Hickey for about £13 million (Gary
Jacob writes). The 19-year-old left
back has impressed for Bologna this
season and has been linked with
Napoli and Newcastle United.
Hickey won his first Scotland cap
in March. He has started 34 games
for Bologna in Serie A this season,
scoring five goals. Hickey joined the
Italian side after leaving Heart of
Midlothian for £1.5 million in 2020.

Ince gets permanent role

Reading have appointed Paul Ince as
permanent manager after his
successful interim spell in charge.
Ince took over from Veljko Paunovic
in February and won four and drew
three of his first 11 games, securing
safety in the Sky Bet Championship.
The former Manchester United
and Liverpool midfielder will again
be joined by his assistant Alex Rae.
Mark Bowen has also returned as the
head of football operations.

Huddersfield in final

but ‘idiots’ taint win

The post-match scenes threatened to
take the gloss off Huddersfield’s
performance as they reached a sixth
play-off final. They have won their
previous three at the national stadium
and will face Nottingham Forest or
Sheffield United on May 29 to contest a
place in the Premier League.
They dug out a result despite being
far from their best, a trait that has
served them well this season. As in the
drawn first leg at Kenilworth Road,
Huddersfield recovered from a below-
par first-half display, when they could
have been well in arrears as Harry
Cornick spurned a trio of chances and
goalkeeper Lee Nicholls saved well
from Robert Snodgrass and James
Bree.
The second-half introduction of
Sorba Thomas, the influential forward
who had been sidelined for almost a
month through injury before the first
leg, provided a much-needed spark and
Huddersfield thought they had taken
the lead when Tom Leeds headed home
a free kick from the substitute, only for
the effort to be ruled out for a push.
Harry Toffolo then appeared to be
brought down in the area by goalkeeper
Matt Ingram, but referee Peter Bankes
was unmoved. With extra time beckon-
ing, Thomas swung another telling set
piece into the box and Rhodes, on for
the injured Danny Ward, diverted the
ball in with an outstretched leg at the
back post.
“We’ve come through a very tough
tie and I’m proud of the players,” Carlos
Corberán, the Huddersfield head
coach, said. “We have one more game
this season and we’ll prepare in the best
possible way to make sure we can finish
the job at Wembley.”
