on May 13, 2022.Walter was aleadingRa-
diologistat INOVAFairfaxHospitalfor more
thanfour decadesand afoundingmember
of FairfaxRadiologicalConsultants,the re-
gion’slargestradiologypractice.
Walter is survivedby and will be deeply
missedby his belovedwife Renaof 10 years.
He was the devotedfatherof Michael(Su-
san),Stephen(Ketty),Patrick (Lynn) and Ann
Farrell Pulliam,and lovinggrandfatherof 13
grandchildrenand sevengreatgrandchil-
dren.Walter was precededin deathby his
parentsWalter Sr.and Stephanie;his broth-
er Robert;his first wife of 50 yearsBridget;
and his son-in-lawJoel Pulliam.
Walter was bornin LowellMA in 1935de-
scendedfromIrishand Polishimmigrant
families.Hewas raised in AkronOH.Upon
graduatingfromSt Mary’sHigh Schoolin
Akron,he was awardedan academicschol-
arshipto the MassachusettsInstituteof
Technology,wherehe earnedabachelor
of sciencedegreein 1956.He wenton to

earnhis medicaldegreefromWesternRe-
serveMedicalSchoolin 1960.He completed
his residencyin DiagnosticRadiologyat the
NationalInstitutesof Healthwhileservingin
the U.S. PublicHealth Service. In 1968Walter
and wifeBridgetmovedtheiryoungfamily
to McLeanVA.Joiningthe Radiologygroup
formingat FairfaxHospital,he developed
an expertisein interventionalradiologyand
was the first to bringangiographyto Fairfax.
WhenCT scanningrevolutionizedmedicine
he was amongthe first radiologistsin the
area to use the new technologyfor interven-
tionalproceduresto treatas well as diag-
nosedisease.Hecontinuedto practiceuntil
his retirementin 1995.
Walter was akind and generousman,de-
votedto his family,his faith,and his many
deepand long-lastingfriendships.Amanof
manyinterestsand abilities,Walterenjoyed
tutoringhis grandchildren,andcontinuing
hiseducationby enrollingin postgraduate
coursesin science,historyand the arts.He
traveledthe world,lovedto ski, and play
golf.Hewas alongtimeactivememberof
WashingtonGolf and CountryClub.Hehad
aprofoundlove of Bridget’snativeIreland,
havingvisitedmorethan25 times.
Walter enjoyedhis final yearslivingwith his
wifeRenaBrendesin theirMcLeanhome
and becamean importantmemberof the
BrendesFamily,which broughtall greatjoy
and comfort.

Knownto all as Millie,she was the eldest
daughterof EdwardJ. Fox, Jr.and Lucy
BuckFox, and was bornJanuary16, 1929in
Easton,PA.She attended theEthel Walker
Schooland Wells College.After college,she
livedin NewYork City,workingfor Merrill
Lynch until she movedto Washington,DC in
the early1950s.Millie workedfor California
Congressman,JohnAllen,whointroduced
her to his goodfriend,JuniorCongressman
fromSan Francisco,WilliamS. Mailliard.Bill
and Milliemarriedin 1957,and raised three
daughters,Julia, Josephineand Leigh.
Milliewas devotedto her threedaughters,
her fourstep-children,Bill Jr., Antoinette,
Ward and Kristinaand her five grandchil-
dren.Millie,amatriarch,kept her geograph-
icallydispersedfamilyunitedby hosting
excitingadventuresall overthe world.Part
of her lastinglegacyare the closebonds
forgedduringthosetripsbetweenher chil-
dren,theirsiblingsand her grandchildren.
Her tripsalso sparkedapassionfor travel

in all.
As the wifeof aCongressmanand Am-
bassadorto the Organizationof American
States(OAS),Millielovedto entertainand
travel and did so extensivelywithher hus-
band.She also enjoyedgardening,especial-
ly at her lovelymountaintophomein Blue-
mont,VA.
Milliewas adedicatedvolunteerfor several
organizationsincludingthe JuniorLeague
of Washington,TheWashingtonHome,The
SmithsonianWomen’sCommittee,The Sul-
grave Club,The EvergreenGardenClub,and
the WashingtonAntiquesGroup.
Millieis survivedby her threedaughters
JuliaMailliardNelson,JosephineMailliard
Fleming (Steve), LeighMailliard Walker
(Brian);and her step-children,Ward Mail-
liard(Kranti),Antoinette Mailliard and Janie
Mailliard,wifeof the late Bill Mailliard,Jr.;
and Millie’sfive grandchildrenSteven(Ally),
Jennifer,Alexis,Williamand Andrew.Mil-
lie is alsosurvivedby her sister,Dorothy
Elickerand brother-in-lawEd Reedas well
as manynieces,nephewsand step-grand-
childrenand great-grandchildren.She was

Lt. in the Army.Duringhis distinguished 20
yearcareerhemovedupintheranksto
LieutenantColonelas he servedin avariety
of highprofilecommand,staffand training
assignments.Most noteworthywas his as-
signmentwiththe ArmsControland Disar-
mamentAgency,State Department.Edward
(Ed) served2combattoursin Vietnam.He

was laterassignedto the Pentagon,which
led to aspecialassignmentas the Armymil-
itaryliaisonto the Mayorof the Districtof
Columbia.Edretiredin1974.
He beganhis localgovernmentcareerwith
theDCgovernment.Heworkedinsever-
al capacitiesfor 20 yearsin the areasof
Personnel Management,EPAand OSHA
Compliance,Contracting,Labor Manage-
mentandUnionNegotiations,FacilityMan-
agement,and PublicWorks Management.
Whenhe retiredfromthe District,he was
servingas Administrator,Water and Sewer
UtilityAdministration(WASUA). Afterafew
years’retirement,Ed took apositionas Staff
AdministratorinPrinceGeorge’sCounty
Government.HelaterservedasAssociate
Directorof Officeof HighwayMaintenance.
In 2009Ed wasappointedby the County
Executiveas Director,Officeof Central Ser-
vices.Heretiredin 2011.
Ed is survivedby his wife,MonterzScott;

die LamontSmith,five grandchildrenand a
host of otherrelatives.

great-great-great-grandsonof Capt.Edward
Yarboroughof the 3rd RegimentNorthCar-
olinaContinentalInfantryduringthe Ameri-

can Revolution.
Mrs.Yarborough grewup on the familybeef
farmin the beautifulrollinghills of Green
County,Wisconsin.She receivedaBachelor
of Sciencedegreein HomeEconomicswith
an emphasison InteriorDecoratingand De-
sign fromPurdueUniversityin 1955.
WhileattendingPurdueUniversity,she met
and marriedWilliamYarborough. At that
timehe was the conductorof the Purdue
Orchestra, afacultyand studentorchestra
whereRuthplayedthe Frenchhorn. They
remainedhappilymarriedfor nearly 50
years.Their proudestaccomplishmentwas
combiningtheirtalentsto formand operate
the AmericanChamberOrchestrafor 16
years.Venueswheretheyperformedin-
cludedAndersonHouse,numerousembas-
sies and the KennedyCenter.
William’sprofessionallife tookthem to
manylocationsincludingNorfolk,Virginia;
TraverseCity,Michigan;Chicago, Boston,
Philadelphia,Los Angeles,and to overseas
venues includingHawaii,London,Paris,
Rome,Viennaand Bucharest. Theyalso
traveledfor pleasurein the US,Canadaand
Mexico.
WhenBill’shealthdeclined,theymovedto
Madison,WI to be closerto family.After the
passingof her husband,Ruthvolunteeredto
supportthe arts at the OvertureCenterand
for neighborhoodbeautificationprojectsin
the CapitolNeighborhoodof Madison,Wis-
consin. ACelebrationof Life will be held
Thursday,June 2.

HelenZell, aHolocaustSurvivor,died on May
14, 2022.She was bornin Zavidova,Czecho-
slovakianearMuncaz.Herfather,Israel
Berger,and mother,SheindelSmulewicz,
and siblingsGoldie,Feige,MoisheMayer,
Bellaand Rudyawerevictimsof the Holo-
caust.Only Helen,Bellaand Rudyasurvived.
In April 1944 she was takento the Ghetto
Mukacevo.In1944 she was imprisonedin
Auschwitz,Ravensbruckand Leipzigcon-
centrationcamps.Helenwaspartof the
DeathMarchin 1945and was liberatedby
the Russianson August5, 1945.
She met her husbandWolf Zelovic(William
Zell),anotherHolocaustSurvivor,after she
was freed.Theywerehappilymarriedfor 55
yearsand he passedawayin 2001.
TheyflewfromPragueto Brusselsand
ontoLaGuardiaAirportin NewYork. They

arrivedin the US in November,1948 with
their6monthold son Sam,whowas born
in Czechoslovakia.
Theymovedto McKeesport,PA and had an-
otherson Jeffrey.They subsequentlymoved
to WhiteOak, PA and wereactivelyinvolved
withGemilasChesedSynagogue.William
builtasuccessfulwoodworkingbusiness,
Zell Brothers,with his two brothers.Years
latertheymovedto York, PA and became
activemembersof OhevShalomCongre-
gation.Helenmovedto Austin,TX in 2015.
Helenleavesbehindher lovingsonsSam
(Arlene)in Austin,TX andJeff (Lauri)in
Washington,DC.
Helenhas six lovinggrandchildren:Adam
Zell (Rachel),AlanaSeigel(Adam)and Lexie
Zell (Alex)in Austin,TX, Jason Zell (Kayleigh)
in Washington,DC,Carly Zell in Brooklyn,NY
and RyanZell in Austin,TX.
She has nineamazinggreat-grandchildren:
