NATIONAL TRENDS

METAL ASIA | 12/2017 43

Vedanta is importing 60 to 65 per cent of its alumina
requirement from different countries. However, with the LME
metal prices remaining robust, scaling up aluminium production
based on imported alumina will be viable. Pati pointed out that
LME aluminium prices have been hovering over 2000 dollar
per tonne for last six months and are expected to remain in the
range of 2000 to 2200 dollar range for atleast next two years.
Aluminium demand in the country is growing at a rate of 7.5
per cent outpacing the world demand growth of 5 per cent.

With the BALCO unit going for capacity addition of 0.42
MT and Jharsuguda unit achieving rated capacity of 1.75
MT, Vedanta will account for more than half of the country’s
aluminium production couple of years down the line.

Vedanta wins state approval to

expand its Lanjigarh Alumina

Refinery

London-based Indian metals miner Vedanta Resources plc.
has obtained permission from the Odisha state government to
expand its refinery in the state.

Citing the ever-strengthening global demand for aluminium,
Vedanta petitioned the state government to bump up capacity
at its alumina refinery at Lanjigarh. Presently, the refinery has
an annual capacity of 1 million metric tonnes. However, with
clearance from the state government, the plant’s capacity is
expected to reach 6 million metric tonnes per annum.

According to Vedanta, the expansion will likely require an
investment of US$993 million and be carried out only after the
company is able to obtain an additional 1,600 acres for the project.

Though the state government has signed off on the expansion
in principle, Vedanta still requires a final nod from a ‘high
level clearance authority’ chaired by the state’s chief minister.
However, the state government has recommended an increase
in the capacity of the company’s captive power plant from 90
MW to 340 MW.

Currently, the refinery boasts ISO 9001 and ISO 14001
certifications and operates at a plant-availability factor of 92
per cent.
