Golf Digest South Africa — January 2018

(Tuis.) #1
unshine Tour golfer Andrew
Georgiou has found a way to
take the pressure off playing
golf for a living. He’s conceived
an app called GolfPlayed which received a
popular response in 2017. He’s now about
to launch it globally in January at the annual
PGA Merchandise Show in Florida.
Competing successfully on the Sunshine
Tour is a tough job. Georgiou, who was
raised on the Erinvale golf estate in Som-
erset West – his father Tony has been in the
golf industry, was at Woodhill in Pretoria
on November 21, teeing up in a qualifying
round for the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open
with 77 other hopefuls. He shot a four-un-
der-par 68, but with only seven tournament
spots available he missed out when two
other players on 68, Christiaan Basson and
Omar Sandys, birdied the first playoff hole.
“I’ve been a pro for eight years, playing
the tour, and have realised that I need to
find another career to keep myself busy and
earning money,” said the 31-year-old.
“The idea for the app, which was conceived
from scratch by my dad and I, came at a
pro-am when I was asked how many golf
courses I had played around the world.
At the time, I simply had no idea!”
