Pretoria CC is regarded as
Tshwane’s premier golf club and
course, having been ranked No 45 in the
2016 Golf Digest Top 100 rankings. A
wonderful championship test of parkland
golf, it has hosted the Tshwane Open on
the Sunshine Tour / European Tour the
past three years, and will do so again in
March 2018.
The club, now in its second century
(founded in 1910), is a major landmark
in the populous city of Pretoria, a superb
sporting facility close to the city centre.
While the club has moved with the times,
it’s the firmly-rooted traditions, quality
facilities and good company that keeps
members coming back.
The crown jewel is the course, originally
laid out by Bob Grimsdell, and more re-
cently upgraded by the Gary Player Group.
The scenic holes, framed by mature trees,
strike the perfect balance between ev-
eryday playability, while still challenging
the pros. This versatility sees it regularly
playing host to big tournaments.
The course’s lush greenery is also home
to birdies of a different kind. Over 90 spe-
cies of local and international feathered
friends flock to Pretoria CC – just imagine
the stares you’ll get when you swap one of
your “Big Berthas” for binoculars?
No round is complete without stop-
ping off at the charming clubhouse – The
Pavilion – where golfers can celebrate after
a fine round, or sample the fine dining on
offer.
The club offers a six-court squash
centre, six tennis courts, and two bowl-
ing greens. There’s a wine fraternity and
bridge section.
Memorable hole: The dogleg par-4
15th was christened by Bobby Locke as
the club’s signature hole, 389 metres from
the club tees. It usually requires a layup
short of a deep bunker on the right and
trees on the left, leaving an approach with
a medium-iron across a water hazard and
willow tree to an elongated green sloping
from back to front.
