wins in major tournaments this year.

How he did it: Higgo, with 25 birdies, was
12 shots lower than the winning score in
the inaugural Bobby Locke in 2016. Van
Heerden from Walker Park, a semifinalist at
SA Amateur, had 21 birds and an eagle for his
best tournament finish.
Notable: Deon Germishuys had a 10-birdie
63 in the first round which included seven
birdies in a back nine of 30.

Runner-up: Matt Saulez

How he did it: Nienaber, 17, made it
10 wins for the year, but this was his
biggest success, a maiden victory in a
top provincial tournament. The long-
hitting Bloemfontein junior had 23
birdies and three eagles in lapping the
field by eight shots. He was 18-under
on Woodmead’s par 5s.
Notable: Nienaber thanked his
coach Quinton Williams, and also
Bloemfontein tour pro Dean Burmester,
“for giving me some awesome pitching
tips when he let me play with his
TrackMan.”
CAYLUM BOON
Eastern Province Strokeplay,
Humewood GC
Scores: 75-70-65 (210)
Runner-up: Wilco Nienaber 72-75-66
(213), Altin vd Merwe 72-71-70 (213)

How he did it: Boon, 20, defended his
title at Humewood, thanks to seven
birdies and an eagle in a closing 65.
Notable: Christo Lamprecht, who won
the 2017 SA Amateur at Humewood,
eagled two par 4s, the first and ninth,
in a first round 77.
