ajal Mistry, 17, retained her
No 1 ranking in women’s
golf, but it was a closely-
fought contest during
the long season between
the Randpark member and 16-year-old
rival Woo-Ju Son from Country Club
Johannesburg.
They were the two standout players,
enjoying 16 wins between them at both
senior and junior level. Interestingly, Son
finished No 1, fractionally ahead of Mistry,
in the WGSA junior rankings.
The two of them competed in most
of the WGSA ranking tournaments, and
each won four of those. However, the
decisive victory for Mistry was the one

she claimed over Son in the SA Strokeplay
Championship at the Wanderers, which
carried the most points.
Mistry opened 69-69 for a 5-shot lead
over Son and Symone Henriques going
into the final round, and with a closing
74 she held on to win by one from
Henriques, with Son three shots further
back in third.
Mistry’s other wins came in the end-
of-season 54-hole Ackerman Champs
in Cape Town, the Boland Open, and
Gauteng Champs. She also claimed the
Gauteng North and Western Province
matchplay titles, but those did not count
for ranking points.
Mistry played in 20 events, Son in 18,

and their stroke averages were almost
identical for the year, Mistry 73.61 and
Son 73.58.
In January, Son had been the leading
