2017 WOMEN’S CHAMPIONS

2017 WGSA RANKINGS

amateur in the SA Open at
San Lameer, finishing T-9
among the pros to claim the
Jackie Mercer Trophy, and
three of her victories were
in 54-hole tournaments –
Free State, Limpopo and
Southern Cape. She also
triumphed in two other
54-holers, the Nomads SA
Girls championship (by
seven from Mistry) and
Curro Junior International,
but they only counted for
the junior rankings.
Zethu Myeki (East
London), 24, won the
season-ending Mpumalanga
title to again finish third on
the WGSA rankings for a
third consecutive year. It
was her only win, but she
had eight other top-3s in a
consistent display of golf all
year, including a semifinal
appearance at the SA
Amateur.
Symone Henriques
(Glenvista), 16, entered the
top 10 for the first time,
finishing No 4 on the
strength of her runner-up
finish in the SA Strokeplay
and several top-10 finishes.
She was No 3 in the junior
rankings.
Two of the biggest titles
of the year were claimed
by former internationals
returned from college
in America. Michaela
Fletcher won the 72-hole
individual title at the WGSA
teams event, and Cara
Gorlei the SA Amateur.
Lowest round of the year
was by 2016 SA Amateur
champion Lumien
Orton, who had a 64 at
Magersfontein in the final
round of the Northern
Cape Open, which she won
by six from Son. Mistry had
a 66 at Hermanus in the
final round of the Boland
Open, Son a 66 at Clarens
in the final round of her
Free State win, and Caitlyn
Macnab a 66 at Benoni
Lake on her way to winning
the Ekurhuleni Open.
