reference anything that will
have happened of significance
during that game.
Christmas is an odd period for
a footballer – particularly one
playing in England – because at
a time of year when most people
start to scale-down and have
time off from work, our schedule
becomes the busiest it is at any
time of the season.
To be clear, I’m not looking
for any sympathy for anyone
fortunate enough to do what we
all do for a living: play football.
Not one of us would change
it for a minute, and I realise
that by no means are people
who work in football unique in
working at Christmas. There
are the emergency services,
hospital staff, care-workers,
military personnel and many,
many more I could mention,
who work regardless of the date
on a calendar to look after and
protect the rest of us.
