Less cake, more kit
You recently had a piece on what
inspired readers to get out on
their bikes through the winter
months. May I offer two suggestions
which work for me. The fi rst which has
helped me since the clocks went back was
to buy a very bright front light to help with
the early morning (pitch black) pre-work
rides just to see how good it was.
The second suggestion struck me today
(after Christmas) outside my regular cafe
stop. Having indulged over the holiday
i.e. spent and eaten too much, I decided
not to go in and have my usual cake and
coffee, but keep my cash and put it aside
for my next cycling-related purchase.
This has the double benefi t of saving
some money and will assist me in losing
some of the extra pounds I’ve put on
over Christmas.
If that’s too extreme when others are
on a club run, how about committing to
match what you spend in the cafe and
put that in your piggy bank? This has
the added benefi t of getting you out on
the bike more often, therefore helping to
accumulate your savings quicker
and so brings forward the date
when you can make that next
all-important cycling-related
purchase! What more motivation
do you need?

Froome’s the best
Wow! Talk about guilty until
proven innocent! The BEST
British rider of 2017 without
any hesitation, dispute or even
minor argument is Chris Froome.
He won the Tour de France and

the Vuelta in the same year. Yep, he won
two of the hardest races ever in one year.
There is some amazing talent on your list
and I’m chuffed to bits to see (yet another
Yorkshire rider) Tom Pidcock at the top
of the list but surely Froomey has to be
proven guilty before he can be withdrawn
from your list?
Or is the Cycling Weekly law different to
our UK laws?
For sure you would get a backlash
either way but my view remains that he’s
the best and hopefully he’s clean too.

Flash clash
In response to Nigel’s letter (CW Dec 28),
may I comment on fl ashing lights? As a
cyclist I use these routinely because, as
a driver, I notice them on others. A static
light on a bike, seen from inside a car, is
merely one of a myriad of light sources
visible to the driver. A fl ashing light on the
other hand, says ‘cyclist’ in the same way
as two refl ectors bobbing up and down
side-by-side says ‘jogger or cyclist’.
Believe me, a fl ashing light is noticeable
from a long way away — a static
light is merely visible. There’s
a difference, which is why I use
fl ashing lights on my bikes.

Flash back
Perhaps Nigel (CW, Dec 28),
could explain his theory on
fl ashing lights to the emergency
services and give some advice
to designers of car indicators,
roadwork lights, slow moving
vehicles, aircraft lights etc...
