here is something a little

bit special about Colnago

bikes. The love affair that

owners have with them is probably

as much down to the company’s

history as it is the bike itself,

but few other brands elicit such

conspicuous adoration.

A lot of this is down to Ernesto

himself — the man in charge. The

85-year-old still owns and runs

his business (despite an almost

constant fl ood of offers from

potential buyers) and remains a

force of nature.

When I met him in 2005 he

surprised me by throwing a piece

of carbon-fi bre at me from across

his desk. I jumped out of the way

and it clattered to the fl oor. “Hear

that!?” he said in Italian. “That’s

a piece of a ***** bike. Now listen

to this!” Another piece of carbon,

this time half a lug from a C50,

went whistling past and on to the

fl oor. “You can hear the difference

in quality!”

And you know what? He was

right. I picked up the Colnago

carbon and noticed the insides

were as clean and beautiful as the

outside. He insisted this was the

same with all his frames.
