37Wimbledon at home,”he recalls. “We knew ifwe got the same resultas Manchester City we’dstay up. City came back inthe second half to draw 2-2 withLiverpool and they were keepingthe ball in the corner thinkingthat was enough.“In my second season we playedAston Villa away and we had tomatch Sunderland’s result, whowere up against Wimbledon atSelhurst Park. If we drew wewere safe. We lost 1-0 but westill stayed up. At Fulham it wasa different pressure; we wereexpected to win every game. Theywere both fantastic times fordifferent reasons.”Now retired, Neilson is atNorwich City as an academycoach. Staying in the game wasalways on the agenda. “I starteddoing my badges when I was atLuton,” he says. “I retired at 32and the good thing about that wasthat I still played part-time innon-League while I was doing mybadges. It’s totally different - I’mstill learning now. I learned a lotfrom Jean Tigana at Fulham. Hewas in the Arsene Wenger mould;the things he brought in werefive or 10 years ahead of his time.I was the fittest I’ve ever been.I’ve taken some of that into mycoaching career now.“I’ve been a caretaker manager,a first-team coach, an assistantcoach. And I still come back toFulham from time to time withNorwich’s Under-18s. It’s alwaysgreat going back to Motspur Park.”So, what’s next for Neilson thecoach? Did he get the first-teambug when acting as caretaker forLuton? “We won five and drewone in my six-game spell, butwhen I came in on the Mondayafter it’d finished I had the bestnight’s sleep I’d ever had!” helaughs. “You’re always thinkingabout it, but I enjoyed thepressure. Now I’m focusing onhelping players get into the firstteam. But you never know what’saround the corner.”Alan has obvious affectionfor both teams playing today. And he believes it could beanother two-part classic. “I thinkit’ll be a draw,” he concludes.“Southampton will use theirsquad and Fulham will go to win.And I’ll stick my neck out andsay Fulham to win on penaltiesin the Replay!”The Ex-FilesAlan Neilson“I learned a lot from Jean
