THE HIT

Both incoming and outgoing, transfers

have had a huge impact on Fulham

Football Club. John Shirley continues

to count down those that have made

the biggest splash in our history...

Tony Thorpe

1998

It was a big surprise when Tony Thorpe left

Fulham for Bristol City in the summer of 1998

for a Club record £1.35m, as he’d only arrived

at the Cottage in February from Luton Town for

£1m. Top-six Premier League side Blackburn

Rovers had shown interest, but Thorpe opted to

sign a four-year contract with Fulham.

He scored poacher’s goals on his first two

home appearances but after five matches he

was dropped after a poor performance at York

City in favour of Paul Moody, returning from

injury. Thorpe never started a another league

game for Fulham - though he was very much

part of the squad as he came on as substitute

in the remaining eight games and played in

Moody’s absence in the Division Two Play-Offs.

Alain Goma

2001

When Chris Coleman was badly injured in

January 2001, Fulham were keen to replace

him with Newcastle United’s Alain Goma, who

was in dispute with the Magpies’ coaching

staff. It took two months to persuade United to

release the Frenchman, and Fulham had to pay

a Club record £4m to acquire Goma’s services.

The centre-back made an inauspicious start

on his debut at Portsmouth where he was

injured falling into the moat round the pitch,

but he soon established himself as a regular in

our Premier League side.

He earned a new contract in 2004, but two

years later, after 117 appearances, we were unable

to agree a further deal with Goma and, with talks

at a stalemate, he chose to retire, aged 33.
