Jack Fryer
1903
It was a major coup for Fulham when goalkeeper Jack Fryer arrived from Derby
County in May 1903, as he’d made more than 200 appearances for the top-flight
Rams and had just played in the FA Cup Final. But Southern League side Fulham
were ambitious to progress, Fryer being one of 23 signings that summer.
A brave and very agile player despite weighing around 95kg, Fryer
commanded his area well, and was a first-team regular for five seasons. He
conceded just 96 goals in 123 Southern League appearances, kept 23 clean
sheets in 1904/05 - and seven in consecutive matches during 1906 - and won
two championship medals.
Unfortunately, just after our promotion to the Football League, he suffered a
bad injury and made only 19 league appearances before retiring in 1910. He was awarded a benefit match
by Fulham and for many years ran a pub near Fulham Broadway.
Brede Hangeland
2008
Roy Hodgson’s first signing as Fulham manager in January 2008 was 26-year
old Brede Hangeland from FC Copenhagen. Media reports indicated interest
in Hangeland from Liverpool and Manchester City, but the Norwegian knew
Hodgson’s methods from their time at Viking Stavanger, and plumped for a
£3m move to the Cottage.
Fulham dramatically avoided relegation in 2008 and finished an all-time
best seventh in the Premier League the year after, conceding just 34 goals, the
fourth lowest in the division. Incredibly, we reached the Europa League Final the following season.
Tall and commanding with good positional sense, Hangeland was made captain in 2012 and altogether
played 272 times for Fulham, scoring 12 goals; no-one has made more Premier League appearances for the
Club. Brede also won 91 caps for Norway. He was released by manager Felix Magath after our relegation in
2014, and signed for Crystal Palace.
