Fulham FC — Fulham v Southampton — 6 January 2018

(Barry) #1
62 The Official Fulham FC Matchday Programme

N

ext weekend we head

for Teesside to face

Middlesbrough. Regular

opponents for the first half of our

Premier League stay, Boro finally

climbed back to the top tier in

2016, only to fall back a year later.

The Whites have yet to win

in 10 visits to the Riverside

Stadium. We did, however, enjoy

a number of victories at Boro’s

old Ayresome Park venue, the

last of which came in March

  1. On a pitch more suited

to ducks, Fulham proved the

stronger swimmers with goals

from Gordon Davies and Dean

Coney earning a 2-0 success. A

season earlier the Whites had

recorded a 4-1 victory in spite of

losing goalkeeper Gerry Peyton

to injury early in the game. In

those days of just one substitute,

defender Kevin Lock donned

the gloves to give a faultless

performance.

Earlier this season

Middlesbrough drew 1-1 at Craven

Cottage. Aboubakar Kamara’s

first goal for the Whites just

four minutes from time looked

to be the winner. But Cyrus

Christie popped up to open his

Boro account two minutes later.

Christie made the switch to

Teesside during the summer from

Derby County.

Following their relegation,

Middlesbrough opted to replace

caretaker boss Steve Agnew with

former Swansea City gaffer Garry

Monk who made the switch from

Leeds United. There was plenty

of summer transfer activity, with

a club record fee of £15m paid to

Nottingham Forest to secure the

services of Britt Assombalonga.

However, with Boro’s

expected automatic promotion

push not materialising, Monk

was dismissed shortly before

Christmas, with ex-Stoke City

gaffer Tony Pulis taking his place.

Pulis gained his first victory with

a 3-2 success at Preston North

End on New Year’s Day.
