ESCAPE

From Whitby we take the Pickering
road inland and are rewarded with
wonderful views over the North York
Moors National Park. Its heart is the
great expanse of heather moorland,
the largest in the country. Brown, black
and sinister for much of the year, in
late August when the heather blooms,
it is transformed into a glorious green
and purple sea.
Further to the west are the Dales with
their wonderful drystone walls - endlessly
varying patterns of grey against
green that symbolise the very soul of
Yorkshire. In picturesque villages like
Hawes, Grassington and Kettlewell you
can spend the night in traditional inns
sampling hearty home-cooked fare such
as roast beef and Yorkshire pudding and
drinking traditional ales with whimsical
names such as Black Sheep and
Theakston's Old Peculiar.
To the south of the Dales,

Salts Mill.

The green at the opening
hole, Halifax Golf Club.

Yorkshire is well blessed
with real ales such as
Theakston’s Old Peculier.
