clubhouse. This excellent parkland course
has hosted two European Tour events,
and in the late 1970's players such as
Greg Norman, Seve Ballesteros and Tom
Weiskopf were all regular visitors.
After playing Alwoodley we drive
to York and spend the night at The
Grange Hotel, an award-winning
Regency townhouse built in 1834 and
carefully restored to create a luxurious
36-bedroom hotel. Given its history of
conquerors (Roman, Saxon, Viking and
Norman), its not surprising that York is
one of Britain’s most interesting cities.
Within easy walking distance of the
Grange are some of the city highlights:
the 12th century York Minster, one of
the largest Gothic cathedrals in Northern
Europe containing the world's largest
single area of mediaeval stained glass,
and the 13th century city walls originally
built as earth ramparts erected by York's
Viking kings to repel invaders.
