raucous cries of seagulls.
Situated just a few hundred yards from
the famous abbey and its 199 steps is
the White Horse & Griffin offering high-
quality luxury accommodation, and after
checking in we take a late afternoon stroll
to explore the town. Down by the harbour
side, amusement arcades ring with the
sounds of one-armed bandit machines,
while the sea air is tinged with the sickly
sweet aroma of candyfloss and toffee
apples. Brightly painted fishing boats line
the harbour walls where fishermen load
off their catch destined for the towns
numerous fish and chip shops.
“The best fish and chips in the north
are from the Magpie Café,” an old

weathered Yorkshireman tells us, in
an accent as thick as a moorland fog.
Visitors and locals alike take this famous
dish very seriously here. In fact for many
people it’s the main reason to visit this
old port; to wander along the harbour
while tucking into a tray of fish and
chips; wooden fork is optional of course.
The next morning we have the
opportunity for a quick round at
Whitby Golf Club, a interesting 18-hole
cliff-top course that has a couple of
extraordinary golf holes played over
a gorge. The ravine over which both
the 7th and the 16th play is the public
footpath to the beach and a narrow
wooden bridge spans the gorge
allowing golfers access to the fairways.
