Yorkshire's industrial Pennine towns
such as Huddersfield, Holmfirth,
Hebden Bridge and Haworth largely
built during the Industrial Revolution,
are not without a charm of their
own. Chimneys and mills crown the
skylines, graceful viaducts and now
tranquil canals all attest architecturally
to the boom that hit the region in the
1700 and 1800s.
Situated between Halifax and
Haworth is the final course of our
Yorkshire golf trip. Established in
1895 and designed by 5 times Open
champion James Braid and later
altered by Alister MacKenzie, Halifax
Golf Club (also known as Ogden Golf
Club) boasts one of the finest moorland
courses in the United Kingdom.
The first 12 holes represent a steady
climb up the valley with many of the
fairways criss-crossing two streams
nestling in the bottom of steep gullies
which can gather your ball as naturally
and easily as any seaside links. Holes
13 through 16 then sit on a plateau
that provides spectacular views across
the earlier holes and down the scenic
Hebble Valley. There are no water
hazards here and the two par-5's at

Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
